Advice On Condensation
Condensation occurs on cold surfaces when the temperature of the air is cooled below the dew point, i.e., the temperature at which air can no longer support the moisture it contains.
In order to confirm the presence of condensation, readings are taken with a thermohygrometer. This will determine the relevant humidity and temperature of the air and the dew point. If the temperature of the surfaces of the walls is found to be below the dew point, it will mean that condensation is actually occurring at the time of inspection. If the wall temperature is only slightly above the dew point, it means that, when the temperature of these surfaces is further cooled, e.g., overnight, or in cold weather, condensation will occur to an even greater degree.
Condensation is one of the most intractable of problems. However, generally in dealing with this problem, it is necessary to consider heating, possible causes of high humidity, methods of ventilation to remove the moisture-laden air, and ways of insulating cold surfaces.
It is worth remembering to always close the kitchen door when cooking and the bathroom door when bathing. Keep these doors closed when you have finished and, if possible, open a window to let out the steam. Drying clothes on radiators further exacerbates the problem, as does heating the room with bottle gas fires.
Many people think that installing double glazing will lessen the risk of condensation. However, all that will happen will be that the moisture in the air will find the next coldest part of the room to condense i.e., an outside wall or behind a wardrobe or bed, where the air does not readily circulate.
If painted walls are badly stained, you may find that washing the walls with a mild bleach solution will remove the mould and help slow up its return.
Ventilation can be greatly improved by fitting Passyfier vents. Gullivers will be happy to give you a quote for supplying and fitting this means of ventilation. When either moving house or staying put, discovering an infestation or uncovering rising damp can be very stressful. All our staff are trained to put you at ease and explain varying treatments in layman's terms. You will find us capable enough to take over, arrange all the necessary appointments and get a Report and Estimate back to you as quickly as possible. During this period, our Office Staff and Surveyors are contactable at all times to answer any queries which may arise or just to give advice.
