Bark Borer (Ernobius mollis)
Also known as the Waney Edge Borer, this insect is often mistaken by the layman for Common Furniture Beetle.
However, this beetle is not a true wood-borer, it confines it's activities to the bark and immediate sapwood and dies out as soon as there is insufficient nutriment left in the bark and cambium on which to survive.
Solution!
Tunnels can be seen to run close to the surface and, if required, all that is necessary is for these edge timbers to be cut away. As damage caused by this beetle is insignificant, no specialist chemical treatment is necessary.
